Beach Motocross Weekend this year is 10th & 11th October and this year we are going bigger than ever with a fantastic thrill a minute Saturday afternoon entertainment programme.
As well as main raceday on the Sunday –when over 200 motocross bike riders will take to the beach, Weymouth & Portland Lions in partnership with Purbeck Motocross Club have drawn up a fantastic programme of free entertainment for Saturday afternoon. Hot news is that thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Waterside Holiday Group and local developers The Imago Developments Ltd a top UK Stunt Team has been booked to appear!
So the programme for Saturday afternoon looks like this:
- Weymouth’s Odyssey Majorettes
- Gorillaman will also be entertaining the crowds on (and sometimes off!) his quadbike on both Saturday & Sunday afternoons.
He will be taking on Weymouth’s own Cuddly Lion – so some big fights/ good fun should take place!
- There will be a motocross demonstration as a taster for Sundays big event
The star of the show is Jamie Squibb and his stunt display team doing 2 sessions on the beach launching themselves from their mobile ramps. We welcome Jamie back to Weymouth as he amazed us last year with his death defying loops. He brings a larger team for an even longer display this year.
- An added attraction this year is ‘Bartlett’s Beach Buggy’. These respected local Motor engineers and competition drivers will be offering rides on their amazing beach buggy. This will be your only chance to have a car ride on Weymouth’s golden sands –so take the chance! All takings are to the Lions Charity Fund.
- Also new this year is a motorbike rally at The Clock on Sunday. We are working with the organisers of Weymouth Motorbike Night who will be organising a rally for all motorbike enthusiasts to coincide with the main Motocross races on Sunday afternoon
Lions Activities Chairman Trevor Stratton says
‘ Weymouth Beach Motocross Weekend is the original and the best beach motorsport event in Weymouth. We’ve been going 30 years and we pride ourselves in providing free entertainment to residents and visitors alike while raising money for local good causes.
We try and introduce new features and build the event up every year. This year’s even fuller Saturday entertainment programme is a big step forward for us and is due to the continuing generous sponsorship of the Waterside Holiday Group– Weymouth’s own leading 5* holiday park operator. They are renowned for the quality of their operation and their confidence in supporting this Lions event can only be good news’.
Waterside Group’s Managing Director Graham Frampton says:-
‘We try and support local community good causes when we can –and the approach from the Lions made good sense to us both in terms of a charity fundraiser and since it provides shoulder season entertainment for our visitors and exciting family fun. We are all about providing a quality visitor experience and top class events fit into that ambition.’
Alf Stearn, The Chairman of Purbeck Motocross Club says ‘We already have lots of entries for this year’s races so we can promise a great event this year. So Weymouth Esplanade is going to be an exciting place to be on Motocross Weekend!’
Councillor Jason Osborne, WPBCs Tourism Briefholder says
‘We are delighted that Weymouth Beach Motocross will be bigger than ever this year and that they have secured sponsorship from Weymouth’s top holiday park operators and Weymouth BID to provide a very full programme of entertainment on Saturday afternoon’
So come along and enjoy the free show, spend a little money at the stalls on the Esplanade –selling everything from specialist motocross kit to hot food, cockles, donuts, sweets, fudge etc. We also have a range of children’s rides and attractions to keep the whole family busy.
We are also pleased to host a wide range of charity stalls. Already signed up are Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance, Weldmar, The National Trust.
We do all this with help from local businesses to build the course, create the jumps, ramps etc. and indeed to pay for the production of the programme and to provide publicity. This year again our media partners are the Dorset Echo and Wessex FM who will be broadcasting live from the Esplanade on both days.
But the great thing is it’s a free charity event open to anyone who cares to take a stroll down the Esplanade and all proceeds go to local good causes!’
