2. Hardy’s Cottage, Dorchester

Famous author Thomas Hardy’s Birthplace is a small thatched cottage on the outskirts of Thorncombe Woods near Dorchester. It is managed by the National Trust. A car park and visitors centre with café are a short distance away. This is a lovely start for a walk around the woods that Thomas explored as a boy.

3. Roman Town House, Dorchester

Dorchester was founded by the Romans who called it Dunovaria and though most of the original town is now is buried under succeeding layers of history there is still a well preserved site of a Roman Town House.

4. Corfe Castle, Corfe

One of the most popular castles in Dorset to visit – Corfe Castle is about 50 minutes from Weymouth. The ruin of this 1000 year old castle stands proudly on a tall mound in the village of Corfe. Owned by the National Trust there are often medieval fayres and demonstrations of all sorts taking place in the grounds.

5. Lulworth Castle, Lulworth

Owned by the Weld Family and is part of the estate that includes Lulworth Cove and the famous Durdle Door. Lulworth Castle was built in the 17th Century, and the building is steeped in history but tragically was ravaged by fire in 1929. However, the ruins made a stunning backdrop for festivals and events. This castle near Weymouth is well worth a visit.

6. Mapperton House & Gardens, Beaminster

Home to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, it is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden. Fifteen acres of gardens descend from the croquet lawn, through the formal topiary down to the wild garden. Mapperton House is about 50 minutes from Weymouth.

7. Sherborne Castle & Gardens, Sherborne

Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 and the stately home of the Digby family since 1617; Sherborne Castle and Gardens is a fascinating castle in Dorset to visit. In addition, there are 42 acres of beautiful gardens and grounds to explore.

8. Wolfeton House, Dorchester

Wolfeton House is an early Tudor and Elizabethan manor house in Dorset, England. One of the lesser-known historical houses near Weymouth, it is situated amongst water-meadows north-west of Dorchester.
