Weymouth boasts the tagline there’s always something on in Weymouth for a good reason:
Spring kicks off with events like the Quayside Music Festival every Bank Holiday, Fayre in the Square, and the famous Wessex Folk Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors and ‘folkies’ at the end of May every year.
One of the most colourful Weymouth events is when the beach comes alive in May with the International Kite Festival, along with a fairground on Weymouth Esplanade. Hundreds of kites of all sizes and designs hover over Weymouth beach for a whole weekend – amazing and fascinating for all the family!
Summer in Weymouth is a fabulous time, but as if to put the icing on an already very busy cake, Weymouth Carnival takes place on the third Wednesday in August: thousands of people line the Esplanade to watch floats of pirates, dancing Spidermen and children in fish costumes along with all manner of inventive creations. But the jewel in Weymouth’s carnival crown is the annual display by The Red Arrows, filling the sky with patriotic red, white and blue smoke trails – a thrilling and proud spectacle for young and old alike.
Early September is all about Weymouth Waterfest, when Weymouth celebrates everything to do with the sea. Prepare to be entertained by the Deep Sea Diving and Waterspout Surfing displays. Be truly amazed by tall ship Le Marite of Cherbourg. Watching her turning in Weymouth Harbour, under full sail, will not be forgotten in a hurry!
Hallowe’en takes on an extra spookiness with Weymouth’s very own ‘Freaky Friday’ celebrations. The children dress up and complete a Town Trail to name all the monsters on the walls, and all the shops in the town really go the extra mile to win ‘Best Dressed Window’ – it really is worth a visit just to see Weymouth’s ghostly shop windows around Hallowe’en!
A few days before Christmas, Weymouth beach is the scene of herds of Santas chasing one Christmas pudding – and as if that wasn’t enough, Christmas Day sees hundreds of people swimming across Weymouth Harbour! Crazy fun, amazing spectacles and all in the name of charity.
Weymouth not only boasts one of Europe’s Top Ten Beaches, but it’s also in the Top Ten Places to Celebrate New Year’s Eve. Visitors from all over the World join crowds of locals to be part of one of the biggest and best fancy dress parties on Earth. Hotels are booked year-on-year, so don’t leave your hotel booking until the last minute!
