A parade in honour of the HMS Portland’s Freedom of the Borough was held yesterday along Weymouth Esplanade.
The Freedom of the Borough celebrates the privilege of crew being able to parade through the town with swords drawn, bands playing and rifles at the shoulder.
The parade was witnessed by hundreds of onlookers with some lucky enough to view it from their hotel windows. The service started with a performance from the marching band followed by drill exercises expertly carried out by service men and women. The Mayor of Weymouth and Portland gave a brief speech welcoming the HMS Portland and its crew to Weymouth as well as a speech from the Captain of the vessel about the ship and its history with the borough. The crew and Mayor then continued to march along the Esplanade finishing at Weymouth Pavilion where the crew were told to ease and smiles where shared all round.
The HMS Portland is a type 23 frigate and has very close links with the Weymouth and Portland Borough. The vessel will now be taking a long 9 month voyage to the Middle East, saying goodbye on operations.
