Weymouth is one of the most picturesque ports on the south coast, with the perfect mix of commercial fishing vessels, beautiful yachts and motor cruises gracing the harbour. Whilst it’s wonderful to watch these stunning vessels and they travel along the harbour from afar, it’s even more incredible to experience the wonders of life at sea for yourself! With so many boat trips available from Weymouth harbour and the surrounding area, it’s never been easier to get out on the water. Here’s our run down of some of the best boat trips on offer.
Weymouth Bay Rib Charters
Weymouth Bay Rib Charters offer adrenaline-fuelled trips around Weymouth Bay on their 20-minute ‘Bay Blasts’. Take in the wonderful views as the wind rushes through your hair on this action packed tour. Not for the fainted hearted, this purpose built rib reaches speeds of more than 40 miles per hour!
Try your hand at deep-sea fishing on one of Weymouth’s premier charter fishing boats. Snapper Charters offer a variety of fishing trips suitable for all ages and abilities. Half day and evening fishing trips are perfect for beginners and families trying fishing for the first time, whereas full day inshore and wrecking trips better suited to the seasoned angler. On these fun-filled days out you can expect to catch a range of species including Mackerel, Pout, Dogfish as well as brightly coloured Gurnards and rays.
Perfect for thrill seekers looking for an adventurous way to marvel at the beauty of the Jurassic Coast, Jurassic Jetskis offer a tour like no other. Jump behind the controls of one of their state of the art jet skis and enjoy the two-hour experience, which takes one of two routes. Head west to Church Ope Cove on the Isle of Portland where you may be lucky enough to spot the south coasts resident pod of dolphins. Or, head to Durdle Door to the east to enjoy this UNESCO world heritage site from the sea.
The Fleet Explorer is a glass-bottomed boat offering family friendly trips around the Fleet Lagoon. Specially designed to manoeuvre in shallow waters so that you can observe the seabed, this wonderful trip offers an excellent insight into the local marine and bird life. Volunteers provide commentary throughout the hour-long excursion providing unrivalled information about the Tern colony that is being nurtured on the banks of Chesil Beach. If you’re lucky you might even spot a hare or some of the other abundant wildlife along the Fleets shoreline.
Harness the power of the wind and set sail from Weymouth Harbour with Weymouth Charters at the helm of Este, a 30ft motor yacht. Travel along the Jurassic Coast and try your hand at as much or as little sailing as you are comfortable, with expert guidance from a friendly and knowledgeable skipper.
Take a leisurely trip on one of Coastline Cruises vintage World War II Naval boats, which have been lovingly restored to carry passengers along the Jurassic Coast. Originally used to carry cargo, ammunition and soldiers between ports and defences, sit back, relax and watch the world go by as you head to either Weymouth bay or Portland Harbour.
Thunderbolt is a 1960 classic speedboat recently refurbished to its former glory. One of only a handful of vintage speedboats still in operation, Thunderbolt is the epitome of style and elegance. Why not enjoy a jaunt from Weymouth to Portland Harbour on the ‘Waterside Restaurant trip’, where you can arrive in style for a meal overlooking the marina. Or, for something a little bit more extravagant book one Thunderbolts picnic and swimming packages, which come complete with fresh crab, lobster and champagne to savour whilst afloat.
