Weymouth Harbour events are the talk of the town in summer. Whether it’s the Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival every July, when both sides of the Harbour are lined with stalls selling all manner of fresh seafood, or the annual Wessex Folk Festival when thousands of people descend on the south side of the Harbour to soak up the wonderful folky atmosphere.
In May, Fayre in the Square is a fund-raising event in Hope Square and along the south side of the Harbour with live music on the stage and stalls selling all manner of goodies.
In September the waters of the Harbour again become the centre of attention, as Weymouth Waterfest gets underway with a whole weekend of incredible displays of Jet-Lev waterspout acrobatics and tall sailing ship manoeuvers from Le Marite, to name but a few.
The north side of Weymouth Harbour (outside the Rendezvous) is the venue for free outdoor music weekends, with a stage erected next to the Town Bridge. Many hours can be lost just sitting outside the Harbour pubs, watching the live music. You can keep track of the time by watching the Town Bridge lift every two hours, to let the millionaires’ yachts through into Weymouth Marina.
If you are around the Harbour on Christmas Day, you can watch hundreds of people braving the cold to raise money for local charities, by taking part in Weymouth Harbour Swim.
A summer’s day on Weymouth Harbour is an event in itself, whichever side you choose. On the north side, there are several pubs and restaurants with outdoor seating, where you can soak up the sun. On the South side, the children can grapple with crabbing while you relax and enjoy the laid-back friendly atmosphere. Take a seat on the Harbour wall outside The Old Rooms Inn and just watching the to-ing and fro-ing of the boats in Weymouth’s ever-fascinating working Harbour.
