Of all the amazing Weymouth beach events, one of the most spectacular is the Annual Kite Festival, when kites of every imaginable shape and size hover ominously in the skies over the beach. Enormous teddies dally with flying Martians while 50 foot penguins dance in the air. As kite-flying goes, this is serious stuff!
Weymouth Beach is proud to host several sporting events including the Weymouth Half Marathon in March and the RAF Classic Beach Volleyball Championships in July. Weymouth is also the UK venue for the World Tour Biathle where the bay and beach are ideal for this arduous race.
In June, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on Weymouth beach with assault and bridge building displays, featuring tanks and Royal Engineers, followed by a remembrance parade.
The beach provides the perfect area for many of the best things to do in Weymouth, including live music on specially built stages in summer and Motocross championships in the autumn. If you are here in November, you can enjoy the Guy Fawkes celebrations when the whole town descends on the beach and esplanade to watch the huge firework display, launched from a raft in the bay. Families can enjoy the funfair and toffee-apple stalls, before finishing off the evening with traditional fish ‘n’ chips.
A few days before Christmas each year is the ‘Chase the Pudding Race’ when Weymouth beach becomes a scene of frantic red and white, as hundreds of Santas chase one lone Christmas pudding across the beach. What a sight!
